SUMMARY:How data and AI are reshaping research categories and methods: implications for disciplinary boundaries and scientific practice
DESCRIPTION:Check back for details on how to register \nThis event\, titled “How Data and AI Are Reshaping Research Categories and Methods: Implications for Disciplinary Boundaries and Scientific Practice” – part of the Research Assessment for Ethics\, Data\, and AI Discussion Series with partners CoARA\, CODATA and the RDA – will explore the transformative impact of data-driven discovery and artificial intelligence on modern scientific research. As we stand on the cusp of the “fourth scientific paradigm\,” researchers are shifting from traditional hypothesis-driven approaches to methodologies driven by data insights. The panel will address the opportunities and challenges this paradigm presents\, including issues of reproducibility\, transparency\, and ethical considerations in various disciplines. Experts from diverse fields will discuss how interdisciplinary collaboration can be fostered\, the role of human researchers amidst advancing AI technologies\, and how educational institutions can equip the next generation to navigate this evolving landscape. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation that aims to shape the future of research practices in an increasingly data-centric world.

SUMMARY:Research Assessment in the Digital Environment
DESCRIPTION:Find out more and register: Research Assessment in the Digital Environment – The Ethical Data Initiative \n  \nThis is the first webinar in the discussion series titled ‘Research Assessment for Ethics\, Data\, and AI’ organized by the Ethical Data Initiative (EDI)\, Coalition for the Advancing Research Assessment’s Ethics and Research Integrity Policy for Responsible Research Assessment in Data and Artificial Intelligence Working Group (CoARA-ERIP); the International Data Policy Committee (IDPC) of the Committee on Data of the International Science Council (CODATA); and the EOSC-Future/Research Data Alliance Artificial Intelligence and Data Visitation Working Group (RDA-AIDV). \nThe rise of digital technologies has transformed the research landscape\, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and accelerating progress. However\, this shift also presents challenges\, particularly in the ethical dimensions of research assessment. This discussion series explores how research assessment must evolve to address these challenges\, including how we assign value to digital and other non-traditional contributions to knowledge while upholding research integrity. \nThis first session\, Research Assessment in the Digital Environment\, examines key challenges in adapting research assessment to the digital transformation of science\, research and higher education.

SUMMARY:Data Shadows
DESCRIPTION:A film collaboration with philosopher and data scientist Sabina Leonelli\, co-director and artist Jacob van der Beugel and co-director Oliver Page examining notions of Data Shadows.\n\n \n\nStep into a world where art\, science\, and philosophy converge to uncover the unseen dimensions of data.\n\n \n\nThe Ethical Data Initiative invites you to an exclusive screening of Data Shadows\, presented by the Ethical Data Initiative and organised by the TUM Think Tank at the Technical University of Munich. The captivating short film delves into the uncharted territories of data science. In a unique collaboration featuring philosopher and data scientist Sabina Leonelli\, artist Jacob van der Beugel\, and co-director Oliver Page\, innovative storytelling brings to life the concept of data that is invisible\, inaccessible\, or unexplored.\n\n \n\nThe event will take place on Thursday\, January 16\, 2025 from 17h30-20h00 at the RioKino Cinema in Munich.\n\n \n\nFind out more and book tickets here\n\n\n\n“Just as data are extracted from the real world\, in the context of this film\, we have extracted concrete cores to represent the creation of data. Concrete is an artificial and natural medium\, very akin to data. The central narrative follows the physical journeys of these datacores as they undergo processes of loss\, de-contextualisation\, appropriation and transformation.”\n\n \n\nFind out more about the making of the film here on the Open Science Website\, including several exclusive trailers: https://opensciencestudies.eu/datashadowsfilm/

SUMMARY:International Symposium on Understanding Misinformation
DESCRIPTION:Event: Understanding Misinformation – The Ethical Data Initiative\n\nThe Understanding Misinformation Workshop will take place on 9 December 2024 in Munich. The workshop brings together philosophers\, social scientists\, and students of science and technology studies to discuss what it means to be informed\, particularly in light of challenges around misinformation in relation to scientific research and its use as evidence for decision-making. Is misinformation only a matter of disseminating “fake news” and false facts? Can we tackle misinformation by fixing the knowledge that is available online? Can misinformation be addressed simply by correcting online knowledge? Does viewing misinformation solely as lies overlook important nuances?\n\n \n\nEDI Research Director Sabina Leonelli will speak with Maya J. Goldenberg (University of Guelph) and Marcel Boumans (Utrecht University) about their upcoming book on misinformation in scientific research and its impact on decision-making. EDI researchers Kim Hajek and Paul Trauttmansdorff\, together with Silke Beck (Technical University of Munich)\, will join them on the panel to discuss questions about the relationship between misinformation\, science\, and democracy.\n\n \n\nThis event is hosted by the Chair of Philosophy and History of Science and Technology at Technical University of Munich\, in collaboration with and support of the Ethical Data Initiative\, and within the framework of Philosophy of Open Science for Diverse Research Environments project\, funded by ERC-European Research Council.\n\n\n\nEvent Details:\n\n \n\n Date: 9 December 2024 [Monday]\n \n Time: 15:30–18:00 [CET]\n \n Location: KKV Hansa E.V.\, Briennerstr. 39\, 80333 München\n \n Host: Chair of Philosophy and History of Science and Technology\, TUM\n\n \n\nFor more information and registration\, please visit https://www.eventbrite.de/e/understanding-misinformation-international-symposium-tickets-1058119206029?aff=oddtdtcreator
