DESCRIPTION:As data-driven research reshapes global science\, industry\, and governance\, a critical question remains: how do we ensure that the infrastructures we build are both technologically robust and socially fair? \nTo address this challenge\, the EDI\, in collaboration with the University of Exeter and the Technical University of Munich\, is hosting The Ethical Data Initiative Stakeholder Forum: Framing the Future of the Global Research Commons on the afternoon of Monday 5th October. \nThe Forum precedes the Research Data Alliance’s 27th Plenary Meeting (RDA P27)\, which runs from Tuesday 6th to Thursday 8th October at The Kia Oval in London. This pre-plenary event will unite leading global voices in research governance\, international funding\, and data policy to bridge the gap between technical infrastructure and ethical stewardship. \nThe afternoon features two complementary panel discussions: the first examines the governance of data sharing to ensure research commons remain inclusive and equitable\, while the second explores the practical challenges of reconciling complex management principles such as FAIR\, CARE\, and TRUST. SUMMARY:Research Data Management Ethics Birds of a Feather
DESCRIPTION:People attending the in-person RDA 27th Plenary at The Kia Oval in London 6th to 8th October are invited to join the Research Data Management Ethics Birds of a Feather breakout session in the England Suite 14:30-16:00 on Tuesday 6th October. \nThe session aims to bring together leading organisations working on research data management principles\, including the Research Data Alliance (RDA)\, CODATA\, World Data System (WDS)\, and the Ethical Data Initiative (EDI). The group will focus on deepening understanding of the ethical aspects of research data management and will provide actionable guidelines for data practitioners and policy makers. \nAn initial project will develop ethical guidance for implementing the FAIR\, CARE and TRUST principles\, with a particular focus on their combined use. Over the years\, it has been noted that these principles would be strengthened by a robust ethical foundation\, not only to enable more effective use across different application contexts but also to reconcile tensions that sometimes arise between them. \nOther important principles will also be considered\, including the ‘Core Values and Guiding Principles’ articulated in the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science. \nThe purpose of this activity is not to revise any of these sets of principles but to identify and characterise potential tensions and propose how they can be reconciled\, or at least to provide ethical guidance for implementation (e.g. prioritisation) in common situations.
