The Ethical Data Initiative is pleased to announce its partnership with the African Institute for Capacity Development (AICAD) to offer Data Ethics training to faculty and PhD supervisors across Southeast Africa for the second year running as part of a graduate studies supervisor course. This online course aims to equip postgraduate research supervisors with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance their supervision practices and better support individual students. The programme, which is free of charge, will be held from 9-13 September, 2024, and is open to applications from participants across South-East Africa.

AICAD is an international organization funded by the governments of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with its headquarters located at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Juja town. The organisation’s main goal is poverty reduction in the African region through human capacity development.
The graduate studies supervisor course not only aims to teach the fundamentals of Masters and PhD research supervision but also to provide attendees with up-to-date information to tackle the challenges of supervising data science postgraduate courses in the modern age. The course covers the basics of data ethics in research and emphasizes the need for researchers to demonstrate awareness of, and commitment to, responsible research and innovation (RRI) principles.

As part of the Campaign for Data Ethics in Higher Education, the Ethical Data Initiative, the University of Nottingham, and the Association of African Universities (AAU) have collaborated to create the Ethical Data Discussion Series. This series features webinars on data ethics, exploring ethical questions inherent in digital technology, data collection, and data-driven research. The next webinar in the series, “Unveiling Bias: Navigating Gender Disparities in Data and AI,” will be held on Tuesday, May 25th at 10:00 British Summer Time (09:00 UTC) and will also be streamed live on AAU TV.
