International Symposium on Understanding Misinformation

Event: Understanding Misinformation – The Ethical Data Initiative The Understanding Misinformation Workshop will take place on 9 December 2024 in Munich. The workshop brings together philosophers, social scientists, and students of science and technology studies to discuss what it means to be informed, particularly in light of challenges around misinformation in relation to scientific research and its use as evidence for decision-making. Is misinformation only a matter of disseminating “fake news” and false facts? Can we tackle misinformation by fixing the knowledge that is available online? Can misinformation be addressed simply by correcting online knowledge? Does viewing misinformation solely as lies overlook important nuances? EDI Research Director Sabina Leonelli will speak with Maya J. Goldenberg (University of Guelph) and Marcel Boumans (Utrecht University) about their upcoming book on misinformation in scientific research and its impact on decision-making. EDI researchers Kim Hajek and Paul Trauttmansdorff, together with Silke Beck (Technical University of Munich), will join them on the panel to discuss questions about the relationship between misinformation, science, and democracy. This event is hosted by the Chair of Philosophy and History of Science and Technology at Technical University of Munich, in collaboration with and support of the Ethical Data Initiative, and within the framework of Philosophy of Open Science for Diverse Research Environments project, funded by ERC-European Research Council.
