Research Data Management Ethics Birds of a Feather

People attending the in-person RDA 27th Plenary at The Kia Oval in London 6th to 8th October are invited to join the Research Data Management Ethics Birds of a Feather breakout session in the England Suite 14:30-16:00 on Tuesday 6th October.

The session aims to bring together leading organisations working on research data management principles, including the Research Data Alliance (RDA), CODATA, World Data System (WDS), and the Ethical Data Initiative (EDI). The group will focus on deepening understanding of the ethical aspects of research data management and will provide actionable guidelines for data practitioners and policy makers.

An initial project will develop ethical guidance for implementing the FAIR, CARE and TRUST principles, with a particular focus on their combined use. Over the years, it has been noted that these principles would be strengthened by a robust ethical foundation, not only to enable more effective use across different application contexts but also to reconcile tensions that sometimes arise between them.

Other important principles will also be considered, including the ‘Core Values and Guiding Principles’ articulated in the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science.

The purpose of this activity is not to revise any of these sets of principles but to identify and characterise potential tensions and propose how they can be reconciled, or at least to provide ethical guidance for implementation (e.g. prioritisation) in common situations. In doing so, the activity will draw on the substantial expertise of the participating organisations, as well as that of the wider community.
